The York Health Economic Consortium has issued a report that predicts rising costs of treating diabetes could threaten to bankrupt the NHS. The report predicts that by 2035 a sixth of the entire NHS budget could be taken up by treatment of the disease. It currently takes up around 10% of the NHS spending, but that figure is expected to rise to 17% over the next 25 years.
One of the most shocking revelations that 80% of the spending on treatment for diabetes complications such as kidney failure, nerve damage, and amputation could have been prevented with an investment in better aid for the prevention and management of the condition. 3.8 million people in the UK receive treatment for diabetes, and this number is expected to rise to 6.25 million in just over two decades.
Barbara Young of Diabetes UK has expressed the call for major action to be taken to prevent those statistics from being realised. She emphasises that should this report’s predictions become a reality, the financial pressure on the NHS will inevitably lead to bankruptcy. She found the most shocking statistic to be that 80% of treatment costs for complications could have been avoided with better investment. She says the NHS and the Government need to find some genuine solutions for the issue and soon, otherwise the financial strain it will put on the NHS could cause irreversible damage.
Department of Health’s spokeswoman has assured people that they are aware of the seriousness of diabetes and the strain it puts on the NHS, and they are already in the process of trying to lower those statistics.
She says they are dealing with the increasing number of type 2 diabetes cases by urging people to change their lifestyles for the better. They are offering more support to those with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes by giving more information and support through primary care to help them prevent complications and manage the condition. And they are improving the information and care available to those in hospital, to aid in management of the condition and prevention of complications.
